Master the Craps Casino Game: Winning Strategies and Expert Tips

Craps looks chaotic from across the room, but the game runs on a handful of bets that decide almost everything. Learn the Pass Line, the free Odds bet and a simple bankroll rule, and you already play better than most of the table.

How a Craps Round Actually Works

One player is the shooter and rolls two dice. The first roll is the come-out. A 7 or 11 on the come-out pays the Pass Line instantly, while 2, 3 or 12 loses it. Any other total becomes the point, and the shooter keeps rolling until that point repeats or a 7 shows up. Point hit, Pass Line wins. Seven first, Pass Line loses.

That cycle repeats as long as the shooter holds the dice. Everything else on the layout is a side bet running alongside it.

• Pass Line: wins on 7 or 11 at come-out, loses on 2, 3 or 12, then needs the point.
• Don't Pass: the mirror image, with 12 pushing instead of losing.
• Come bet: a Pass Line bet you can place after the point is set, with its own come point.
• Odds bet: an extra wager behind your line bet, paid at true odds with no house edge.

The Bets Worth Your Money

The Pass Line carries a house edge of 1.41 percent, and Don't Pass sits at 1.36 percent. Neither number is the reason craps has a reputation for bad odds. The damage comes from the centre of the layout, where proposition bets can carry edges above 10 percent.

Adding an Odds bet is the single biggest improvement you can make. It pays at true odds, so the casino takes nothing on that portion of your stake. If the point is 4 or 10 you get 2:1, on 5 or 9 you get 3:2, and on 6 or 8 you get 6:5. Most tables cap the Odds bet at a multiple of your line bet, often 3x-4x-5x, so check the felt before you buy in.

Place bets on 6 and 8 are a reasonable middle ground at 1.52 percent, paid 7:6. Hardways, any seven and the one-roll props are entertainment, not strategy. Treat them as such.

Bankroll Rules and the 3-Point Molly

Pick a session bankroll before you log in or sit down, and split it into units you can lose without flinching. A common approach is 20 to 40 units, where one unit equals your flat Pass Line bet. If the table minimum is 5, that means a 100 to 200 bankroll and no more.

The 3-Point Molly spreads three bets across the layout: one on the Pass Line, one on Come, and one more on Come. You end up with three numbers working at once, which smooths out the swings compared with a single line bet. It does not change the house edge. It changes how often you win, and how much you need behind you to survive a cold run.

Set a stop before you start

Decide your loss limit and your win target in the same breath. Leaving at plus 50 percent of your session bankroll is a rule you can keep. Chasing a point of 4 with a doubled stake is not.

Reading the Table and Avoiding Traps

Watch a table for a few minutes before you buy in. You want the minimums, the Odds multiple and how fast the dealers move. Online tables show all three on screen, so there is no excuse for guessing.

• Skip the Fire Bet, All Tall Small and similar side wagers unless you are happy to pay for the sweat.
• Do not press your Odds bet after a loss. The edge does not change because you lost.
• Keep your Come bets working on the come-out only if you understand the extra exposure.
• Log your sessions. Two weeks of notes beats any betting system you read about.

Craps rewards patience more than prediction. The dice have no memory, and neither should your bet sizing.
