Three Card Poker: The Q-6-4 Rule and the Side Bet

Three Card Poker looks like a simplified poker game and is really a single binary decision repeated. You will make one choice with real consequences, and there is a precise hand threshold that tells you what to do. Everything else on the table is a separate bet with a worse edge.

How a Round Works

You place an ante and receive three cards. The dealer receives three cards and must qualify with at least a queen-high hand. If the dealer does not qualify, your ante is paid and the play bet is returned.

Having seen your cards, you either fold and forfeit the ante, or place a play bet of equal size and continue. That decision is what the whole game turns on.

The Q-6-4 Threshold

The standard rule is to play any hand of queen-six-four or better, and to fold anything below it. The threshold is not superstition; it is the point at which the play bet becomes profitable given the dealer's likely holding.

Below that line, folding loses the ante but saves the additional stake. Above it, playing is correct even though the hand may still lose. Following the threshold mechanically is most of what playing well means here, because the alternative is guessing.

The Side Bet Is a Different Game

Pair Plus is an optional bet on your own three cards, paying on a pair or better regardless of the dealer. The payouts look attractive and the house edge is materially higher than the main game, so it is a worse bet by a clear margin.

That does not make it worthless, but it should be understood for what it is: a separate wager with a different, larger edge. Treating it as a way to boost a main-game win is the most common misreading of the table.

Stake and Budget

Decide the ante, the session budget and the number of rounds you intend to play before you start. The play bet doubles your exposure on every hand you continue with, so the effective stake is larger than the ante suggests.

Then follow the threshold and leave the budget alone. Because rounds resolve quickly and the decision is simple, three card poker is easy to play on autopilot, which is exactly when a budget slips.

One more practical note: the six-card bonus on the main bet is part of the same wager, unlike Pair Plus. Read the paytable so you know which payouts belong to which bet before you size your stake.

It also pays to know the ante bonus structure, because the main bet pays on a strong hand even when the dealer does not qualify. That is a real addition to the return, and it is one reason three card poker compares reasonably well with other table games when the paytable is standard.
